Nerd Alert: Settlers of Catan: Might be my gateway to LARP'ing (Live Action Role Playing) and other strategy games

So before I begin about Settler's of Catan, let me give you an overview of Gaya's game history

1) Spectra (my sister) and I would draw elaborate paper dolls (well done ones too), and we would create story lines for them (all of this is normal), but then we would sometimes role play and take on the persona of the paper dolls, for example we would be in the mall and rather than Spectra and Gaya chatting and window shopping, it would be Tiffany and Whitney  (this begins to transcend normal).  It was quite fabulous, Tiffany and Whitney had such great lives and it was so fun taking on these identites. They were smart, athletic, popular, and awesome. I don't remember all the details, but I would say this went on for at least a year or two!

2) Tetris and other computer games  - my parents decided that they would pay Spectra and I to play computer games (interesting parenting strategy- but I guess we both turned out ok). BOYYYYYY - it was awesome.  One day I literally spent 8 hours playing Oregon Trail (forge the river!) and made sweet sweet cash (that I would stash to pay for my math camp for 4 weeks at Mount Holyoke college - no I am not kidding). Needless to say, I was quite good at these games.  But sometimes it showed a negative side to myself (a competitive side (Spectra would call it my slythein side)).  In colonizaiton (a game about colonizing the new world), I would often attack other settlers, stealing the resouces, and destroying those that stood in my way. In the game civilization I would conquer the wonders of the world, explore new lands, and was always prepared for barbarians to attack!!!   I am pretty sure I was awesome at these games.  I also really excelled at tetris -  I was so good and could play for hours (this addiction resurfaced my 2nd year in grad school when I should have been working on a thesis).

3) Traditional board games- my family loves normal board games too, although to be honest they don't often take advantage of my ruthless nature.  I just can't compete at the scrabble and badlerdash's of the world - my parents are just too well read and have decent vocabularies!

4) Other - I love that werewolf murder game, where you sit in a circle and close you eyes....yes, that one!

All of this history leads me to this: Settlers of Catan: A few months ago my friend Lauren introduced me to this board game....oh it is awesome, according to wikipedia, "Players assume the role of settlers on the game board, each attempting to build and develop their settlement while trading and acquiring resources. Players are rewarded points as their settlements grow; the first to reach a set number of points is the winner."  The games rules are initially intimidating and complicated, but soon, you might start dreaming about your strategy and how to get more bricks, or wood!  Literally, I had a dream about my strategy, I needed more stone!!

I am thinking this might be my new addiction.  I really need to be careful or before you know it I will be LARPing (Live Action Role Playing).

Growing up time does not mean no more game time, right?

2 questions for my readers (including those lurkers out there):
1) Any other games I should get my hands on?
2) What game addiction have you had?

Best blog post ever.
I love games. I would beg people to play when I was little. (I have a little brother, but unfortunately, he's 3 years younger so he was kind of useless and he would cheat.) For several years (elementary school), I tried to institute "Family Game Night." I'd pull out the board game options and set them up, but it never happened. :( I hold this over my parents' heads today and now they feel bad. In fact, when they visited me a few weeks ago, I made them re-teach me how to play backgammon. When they visited with my brother a few months ago, we payed Yahtzee (we still have to make sure my brother doesn't cheat ;)).

I loved Mouse Trap when I was a kid. My parents hated it (apparently it's a complicated game??) so they would hide it from me. I loved having babysitters because I'd convince them to let me play Mouse Trap (they always regretted it).

I LOVED Christmas time because the aunts and uncles would come visit and FINALLY I had someone to play games with. (Who can say no to a cute, nagging niece?) We played Tripoly, Monopology Junior, Farkle (my mom has some weird obsession with Farkle), Stack (a dice game - it's fun), and Old Maid (a favorite when I was like 7).

My mom was really big on Discovery Toys (I think we had the entire store) and educational computer games. I spent a lot of time on Oregon Trail (didn't we all...), Number Munchers, Spelling Jungle, Opening Night, and others but I can't remember the other names.

One of the best games/toys we had was Marbleworks. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbxvuh5Tzx4) We'd play it for days on end and all ages could participate. Awesome.

Never Ending Stories (http://www.amazon.com/Never-Ending-Stories/dp/B00135LR0S) was another favorite.

And this game called Freeze Frame. (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2466/freeze-frame)

I loved Guess Who in 3rd grade.

Also was a fan of Battleship. (Were you allowed to play that?)

Clue was always at the top of my list. And Life.

I liked Chutes & Ladders and dominoes when I visited grandparents.

I've also been a tetris addict at multiple times in my life - including now. I downloaded it onto my ipod touch 2 weeks ago.

Mancala has always been one of my favorite games but I think that's because I learned to play it on the computer and it was totally in an exotic "setting."

I liked Nine Men's Morris - in middle school I made my own board game with my mom's woodworking tools and painted it and all.

And Boggle.

But more recently (high school til now): Rummikub (FAVE!), Egyptian Rat Screw, Taboo/Cranium/Pictionary/and similar games, Othello

I hate Risk. I always lose and have to wait hours for everyone else to finish.

I've been wanting to try Settlers of Catan, so I'll have to actually do that.

A group of Rollins folk played Bananagrams grams one Thanksgiving. It's fun. I was winning, like, majorly, so I asked for a clarification of the rules, and sure enough - I wasn't playing correctly.

Did you do Brain Quests?

@Kaleigh - best blog comment ever! You are funny (maybe you should start a blog!). I used to cheat in board games like your bro. but a few years ago I cleaned up my act

We <3 Settlers of Catan! Although I will warn you, I went to a videogame convention this past year and there was a HUGE board game section which was AWESOME and included newer editions/add-ons for Catan - so you might end up at one of those!

We bought a new boardgame called Bezzerwizzer (I think) and it's trivia based, but also strategic. Only had the opportunity to play it once, but I'd recommend it!

(I've always loved Monopoly even though I suck at it!)

I was just explaining to Ben about Oregon trail! He has never had the pleasure of forging the river... quite possibly the best game ever!

@Geoff - thanks for the recommendation! @Linsey - apparently you can download an old version for free, everyone should experience Oregon Trail

Gaya! We're over Settlers but it was awesome while it lasted. We've since moved on to much more hardcore nerd games. Just kidding, but we have a couple we haven't played yet so we should have game night.

Power Grid, Puerto Rico.... maybe others? BTW, Stone Age is pretty hotttttt.
